Skidsteer loaders are compact, agile and very versatile used often in construction, farming, forestry and landscaping industries for tasks such as digging and moving materials.  Skid steers are built on a rigid frame with an engine-powered lift arm or arms to which a range of tools and attachments can be fitted including buckets, forks, cranes, grabs, hammers and shovels.   They can have either four wheels or two tracks, and the front and back axles move automatically. To turn, the operator increases the speed of the wheels on one side, causing the machine to skid or drag across the ground and rotate in the opposite direction.

Main Training Ltd offers CPCS A23 Skidsteer Loader training and testing at our Sussex centre for candidates looking to gain their CPCS Red Trained Operator Card as well as testing for Competent (Blue) Card holders that need to renew.

Achieving the required standard to gain a CPCS Card demonstrates that you can work safely and efficiently and it is the benchmark requirement for many large construction companies.

For the red card, we offer two courses:

  • Novice – This course is suitable for candidates with little or no experience. It includes a theory preparation session, a practical training session and is delivered over a 2 or 3-day period depending on the number of attendees.

  • Experienced – This course is for experienced operators using dumpers on a daily or frequent basis.  It includes a theory prep session and then then test day and is delivered over a 2-day period.

Candidates are able to just book the test day but should familiarise themselves with the theory and practical test requirements. These can be found on the NOCN Jobcards website.

Pre-course Requirements

Delegates must have passed the NOCN CPCS or CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test which should have been taken not more than 2 years before the date of the technical test.

The Skidsteer Loader course includes:

  • Roles and responsibilities

  • Controls and terminology

  • Pre-use inspection checks

  • Travelling over rough, undulating ground, on inclines and level ground both laden and unladen.

  • Confined space manoeuvring.

  • Configure and set for extraction and loading duties.

  • Explain actions required for hazards, underground and overhead services.

  • Extract different materials from stockpiles.

  • Form stockpiles and temporary ramps.

  • Shut down procedures

The test consists of both a theory test and a practical test.

  • Theory Test – This is a verbal test taken on a one-to-one basis with a tester which is recorded.

  • Practical Test – This is the manual test to prove your operating ability to ensure you meet the standards required for the CPCS Red Card.

Successful candidates receive the CPCS Red Trained Operator Card. The Red Card is valid for 2 years. In this time, you must complete your NVQ level 2 to convert the Red Card to a Blue CPCS Competent Operator Card.

We are also able to deliver the Plant Pro Operator Certificate / on-site training for skidsteer loader. This can be delivered at your location or at our training centre in Billingshurst, for greater flexibility and cost-effectiveness.
